WesLor implemented AKS’ robo-kut — a powerful five-axis plasma bevel tool that’s perfect for highly complex beveling operations. This tool is capable of +/- 45 degrees for A, V, K, X, top-Y, and bottom-Y style bevel cuts for weld prep applications, countersinks, and chamfers. Additionally, it’s capable of precision taper compensation or back-beveling. Because of its robust design, it’s capable of taking on challenging beveling projects quickly and with great precision. And it’s exactly what WesLor needed.
Scott Lord, who owned WesLor for 38 years, couldn’t say enough about the efficiency the robo-kut affords to the company. “We do a lot of complete joint penetration, so you have to bevel the material radically with maybe a 1/16” to 1/8“ lay-in,” he said. “We can do that with the AKS machine virtually with just sanding it afterwards.”
With the robo-kut, the company automated intricate beveling processes, surpassing the limitations of its previous tools. Lord elaborated on previous challenges, stating, “Before we had the bevel head, we had a manual tool that was cumbersome. When it was done, it had a clean surface, but if it hit a hard spot, the carbide teeth would shatter, and it was a pain.”
The robo-kut is more powerful than WesLor’s previous tooling, which allows for the company to bypass these expensive issues. Not to mention, the robo-kut is CNC-controlled, eliminating the need for an employee to operate the machine.
Lord also said that the robo-kut is one of the most robust options on the market, making it essential to the company’s everyday operations. “The AKS five-axis head is the most superior on the market. It’s accurate, it’s fast, and I can’t say enough about that. When you’re working with one- to three-inch plates and you’re cutting bevels — and trying to bevel on two sides — you need that accuracy and robustness of that head,” he said.

“I wanted a segmented table and that has worked perfectly,” Lord said. “It’s easy to clean because a lot of times the operator will work in one area, so I don’t have to take the whole table apart to clean out that one area. I just take that one section apart, clean that, and put it back together.”
Lord also mentioned that the segmented table also helps keep the shop air clean — a major bonus for employee health and safety. “If you think about it, you don’t have to have the exhaust fan a whole table requires,” he said. “Our air is very clean in our shop. You always have to be cognizant of the health and wellness of your employees.”
