When it comes to plasma cutting systems, you need a machine that can withstand endless hours of constant uptime. However, even the most robust systems may have issues from time to time. When issues arise, you need a customer support system that can have you up and running again quickly, so you can maximize profits. At AKS Cutting Systems, we pride ourselves on creating robust CNC machinery that ensures better uptime compared to similar tables. But, even our AKS plasma machines need some support now and again.

That’s why we focus heavily on providing exceptional customer service support. When Wesco, a prominent manufacturing company located in Pennsylvania, experienced issues with their AKS machinery, we were there to help. Learn how Kyle Liegl, one of our skilled service technicians, was able to quickly remediate the issue.

Wesco’s Challenge and AKS’ Swift Solution

Wesco specializes in delivering high-quality material-handling equipment — including drum handling, hand truck, and lift machinery. With a dedication to precision and reliability, Wesco utilizes advanced CNC plasma machinery to meet the demands of various industries. The team selected an AKS accu-kut CNC plasma system, equipped with the dependable Hypertherm HPR Plasma Power Supply, to help create high-quality components for its machinery. For over five years, the machine was a critical component of the business operations. However, like any high-performing machine, it requires regular maintenance to function at its best.

The company started facing significant issues with their AKS plasma cutting systems after five years of regular use. The problems included inconsistent coolant flow, Torch Height Control (THC) malfunctions, and erratic torch movements that would eventually cause the torch to stop. Additionally, Wesco team members noticed that the quality of their cuts was tapering off halfway through a nest of parts, which affected the precision of holes and other critical features.

Rapid Response, Expert Diagnosis

When Wesco reached out to AKS Cutting Systems for assistance, Kyle Liegl, one of our service technicians, was quick to spring into action. Within two hours of arriving on-site, Kyle identified the root cause of the AKS plasma machine option. There was low coolant flow stemming from a dying coolant pump within the HPR Power Supply. The fix? A quick, thorough cleaning of the lifter and replacement of the coolant pump.

This is the coolant pump that failed at Wesco. After 5 years of performance, the pump finally died. Kyle identified this issue and replaced the pump.

While he was there, Kyle also discovered that Wesco had fallen behind on its preventative maintenance schedule. The machine’s bearings and torch leads had not been replaced in over five years and were showing signs of wear. One significant indicator of potential torch lead failure, as noted by AKS Service Manager Scott Krankowski, is the green discoloration of the braided shield on the torch leads, a result of oxidation due to overuse. After replacing the coolant pump and recommending further preventative measures, Wesco’s AKS plasma cutting system was back to running smoothly, maintaining high-quality cuts across all sheets.

The Importance of Preventative Maintenance

Kyle emphasizes the importance of regular preventative maintenance, stating, “It’s better to replace these items as a preventative measure than to wait for failure to occur.” This proactive approach not only extends the life of the machinery, but also ensures minimal disruption to daily operations. This allows companies like Wesco to continue cutting six to seven sheets per day, with each sheet containing over 85 parts nested efficiently through the ProNest software.
