Plasma cutter operation can be difficult, especially for smaller shops with high volumes of work. The Challenge
During a routine visit for five-axis bevel training, Kevin noticed that two crucial modules were disabled on the company’s machine. The first module that was disabled was the skeleton cut up feature. This automatically cuts up the remaining plate after parts are produced, which saves significant time and labor. The second module was the plate inventory with auto-crop. This module manages remnant plates, allowing for efficient use of leftover materials. It’s particularly useful for maximizing plate usage when dealing with irregularly shaped remnants.
Without these features enabled, the company had to remove the skeleton off the machine by hand. Since the shop was very small, employees also had to cut the plate by hand. This significantly increased the reliance on manual labor, which cut into productivity and profit margins.
The Solution
Kevin quickly identified that enabling these two modules would dramatically improve the company’s operations. In just 10 minutes, he activated both the skeleton cut-up and plate inventory modules, including the auto-crop features.
The impact of this simple change was immediate and significant. Prior to the change, the company was only using about 40% of the potential of the machine. With the update, the company dramatically increased efficiency. The skeleton cut-up module automates the process of breaking down the leftover plate material, which saves considerable time and labor. Additionally, the plate inventory module allows the company to reduce waste, maximize space, and increase profit margins.
